I think it is a good compromise. I would not complain about it. We can even
reuse the current focus indicator for this. We just have to add a button:
What you propose is essentially:
* Feature opens where focus is, but:
   * Focus is always reset to the first pane when a feature is selected
   * Focus is not set by clicking the pane, but with a dedicated button.

It'd work for me, because the "Feature opens where focus is" behavior is
there :)
