I *had* a bunch of 8mm/Hi8 tapes - all saved away on DVD and/or SVCD
        now.

Aaron, do you want to field this one or shall I be the Canopus
        point-man? :-)

Those of you who have heard this before can tune out now <grin>

The advice in the past, to anyone who has asked, has been to buy
        a cheap IEEE1394 card (~$30 for a 3port version) and a Canopus ADVC-100
        analog to DV converter.

I've done a few Hi8 to DVD capture/encoding sessions with the Canopu
box and they look fantastic. Since Hi8 is an analog format there
is still the need to blacken the borders (left and bottom need it the
most) but the amount that needs to be trimmed is less than with regular
        8mm.

Raw fullframe (NTSC) is about 13MB/s sustained or ~45GB/hr and, as I
found out after a year of fiddling with a WinTV card, isn't worth
dealing with. Capturing via IEEE1394 cuts the data rate to about
13GB/hr and I believe the Canopus has higher quality conversion
circuitry than the WinTV card (makes sense since we're comparing a
        $269 unit to a $99 one).

How much money do you have? :-) Seriously, prices range from ~$800 up
to $3500 for the consumer versions. The pro stuff you don't want to
        ask ;)

> really nice quality analog capture board - but I need advise on that too.

See above :) I'm sure others will chime in about the Canopus unit
now - there are several other converts that hang out around this list.

        Cheers,
