Welcome. A really lowend (and $400 is that ;)) unit may or may not
have "pass thru" where the camcorder will convert external S-Video to
DV out. In the Digital8 camcorders some models do and the lower end
model did not have 'pass thru'.

>even beat a $2000-$3000 camcorder's ability to convert analog to digital.

Most of what the extra money goes for is a 3 chip CCD and better
optics. If I were a serious amateur I'd go for the Sony 950 - if you
shop around you can get it for about $1500 (list is $2400 or so).

In the top end single chip CCD arena around $800 or so will get you
a real good camcorder - just check the specs to see if it'll do
        pass thru conversion.

Something about using a really good camcorder to do DV conversion
bothers me though. Granted the tape isn't moving so there's no
        wear&tear mechanically.

In any event a DV method will be easier/simpler than the methods
you have been using - that much I know.

>However, if the Canopus even beats miniDV/DV camcorders then I'm sold.

It might, it might not. There might be a difference but how
visible it is I have no data or experience with.

        Cheers,
        Steven Schultz
