        Actually, the problem was that various PCI chipsets (VIA comes to
        mind) did not deal well with the PCI bridge.   For a long time the
        advice was to get a BX chipset based board.

        Do you still have access to the IBM Power4 system?   I also had the
        crash with -M 2 but that was quickly fixed.
