        You can use those ports to hook up an analog->DV converter unit as
        well as attach external disc drives (or ieee1394 scanners - does
        Sane support those?).   A converter is much less expensive than a
        camcorder.   You attach the video (either S-Video or composite) and
        audio cables to the converter's inputs and then the output side is
        plugged into one of the ieee1394 ports.   Use Kino or dvgrab and
        you're all set to capture and edit.
