FWIW, I recently fixed my shifter lockout on my GLi. My problem was not
the ball, but the lock out "finger" or "Ear" on the shifter rod itself.
I had to get a new shifter rod ($29 from the dealer). The parts guy
told me that lots of people will replace the ball under the shift rod to
try to fix the lockout, but he said the ball rarely fails or wears out,
that it's almost always the finger on the shifter rod. (I think the
ball is only like $11 from the dealer)

I wrote up the whole procedure if anyone's interested:

One other thing for someone considering shifter work. I found dropping
the exhaust and heat shield to get to the shifter box to not be that big
a deal, though I'd been scared by reading what a PITA it is. I just put
my car on jackstands and used a floorjack to lower the exhaust, and the
exhaust bolts weren't rusted.

Laters,
