I replaced my shifter parts with the contents of Mike Potter's kit
and the difference was like night and day. Night and day, I say. In my
experience, any plan short of this risks being too little too late.

While I do understand that "selective" repacement is not necessarily a good
thing,
sometimes "cost" (of parts and labor) come into play.

By all means - if yer paying for labor - then rebuild EVERYTHING - its
not that much more (most of the labor is involved with the R&R of
the exhaust and the shifter "ball"/spring rebuild).

However - the linkages under the hood are
  - relatively easy to get at (just open the hood)
  - can be "pricey" ( the $$$ for the "Trans relay shaft
with ball - 191-711-173B ($39.75 from Rocky Mtn)"
 - might not be that worn out...

IMHO the major wear items are
  - the ball under the shifter
  - the bushing that controls the shifter rod in/out
    of the shifter box
  - the $40 rubber ball on a stick

So - the first step to take is the *hard* part of rebuilding the
stuff thats in the "center tunnel" - that involves the exhaust R&R.
The rest of the parts can be done later on an as needed basis -
it wont require quite as much labor effort to work on.

Hence the fix the stuff thats hard to do FIRST and then do the
easier to replace stuff later..

BTW - to take the shifter out of the car - I had to dissaemble the
ball on a stick part - so yeah - that part is best replaced at the
time you take the shifter out. But geeze - $40 for that part!!!
(it is possible to dissasemble the ball on a stick w/o removing the
shifter - *IF* the clamp collar isnt too stuck)
