Hi everyone,
I checked my Motronic control unit (computer/brain) p/n last night on the
90.5 GLI, and according to the Bentley manual it's
the late model (10/90-->) 49-state box. Actually, my box has a "Q" suffix on
the p/n but I'm hoping that's irrelevant. My '91 GLI
has (I think) a late model CA-only box. I'm going to confirm this tomorrow.
Question: Has anyone ever swapped their CA box for a
49-state? Does it make any difference in power, MPG, or throttle repsonse? Can
they be switched with no problems? Reason I ask is
'cuz my 91 has less low-end power than the 90, and all tune-up type stuff has
been checked (ignition, compression, timing, etc.).
Any info would be appreciated. When I open up the 91 and get the p/n, I'll post
the p/n's of both boxes in case anyone cares.
Oddity: My 90.5 GLI was built in 4/90, according to the sticker in the door
jamb. The brain, according to Bentley, was used from
10/90-up. Huh??? Also, my car was originally from CA, or so I thought- but it
has a 49-state brain. Seems a PO may have switched
them. Unless, of course, that "Q" suffix denotes a CA version (from
interpolating the Bentley info, I doubt it). Which is why I was
wondering if there's power to be found with the 49-state box.... sorry for the
on-topic post, I promise to get back to American
musclecars, bikes, and RWD ASAP. :-D
