It's on the back of the cylinder head, right behind the distributor. I'm willing to bet that the wire hs just come loose. If I remember correctly, the wire on my CIS-E (1.8L) GTI was green with a black stripe. Not sure if the 2.0Ls are the same, and I don't feel like getting up to go look. ;-)
