As far as '91 GTI's and Jetta 16v's go, here's some numbers and stuff: The GTI weighs 2400lbs. The GLI weighs 2550lbs. 150 lbs is significant to straight line. The GTI will always win as long as the driver is competent. Handling: The way the Jetta is constructed gives it a tighter back end, and combined with a better weight distribution, it makes it more balanced than the GTI. But ... that doesn't mean it would win on a track.
Less weight is better, but Jettas are still cool. Everyone has different taste.
