I got some rubbing from turning the wheel with 195/65-14 snow tires on my '88 GTI w/ stock suspension at almost full lock. 195/55/14 and 195/60/14 never ever rubbed, but the suspension wasn't lowered, so YMMV.
What is the distance from the wheel center to the wheel arch lip there? Maybe your car is lowered more than 1.5"? >I have run the following tire sizes on my GTI without any rubbing problems >(at least on the brakes) > >185/60-14 >195/55-14 >195/60-14 >205/45-16 > >What do the shocks/springs look like?
