I would say 600 is about right to pay someone to do it but if you've got a good set of sockets and basic other things, mechanical skills being one of them, it's not that bad. I just got my car back together from changing the head gasket actually. One thing i will say is that if the gasket is leaking anywhere it is a pretty good indication of the condition of the rest of the gasket. I would be inclined to change it when you know it's bad(like now) but before it gets any worse and could possibly cause more problems, or leave you stranded somewhere.
