I just reminded I had a similar issue with the gti last year. The mounts
were real tight, but the engine would still rock...after I
double-checked everything, I noticed that a big rod/screw that holds the
starter to the block and on the front mount bracket was gone (don't ask
how the starter hung on). Therefore, the front of the engine was loose
as it wasn't connected to the mount as it should've been.
Also, the engine in our 16v are supposed to move quite a bit with the
stock mounts. It is what I believe to be a major flaw in the 16v
design...if it clunks tough, you definitely have a problem.
