Yes, they move about 2-3" rearward normally..... Hasnt anyone here made a
torque-rod for their cars? All you have to do is mount a rod on spherical ends
from somewhere on the engine, back to the firewall or up to the front, that way
the front-back rocking is minimized, but the engine cal still float around to
absorb and dampen vibration.... Hrm, maybe I need to devise a kit here..
Ratlow, lets start fabbing one off your car, K?

I just reminded I had a similar issue with the gti last year. The mounts were
real tight, but the engine would still rock...after I double-checked
everything, I noticed that a big rod/screw that holds the starter to the block
and on the front mount bracket was gone (don't ask how the starter hung on).
Therefore, the front of the engine was loose as it wasn't connected to the
mount as it should've been.
Also, the engine in our 16v are supposed to move quite a bit with the stock
mounts. It is what I believe to be a major flaw in the 16v design...if it
clunks tough, you definitely have a problem.

Ok i tried checking the mounts as some people sugested by shaking the
engine around. My question is how much should the engine be able to move
around? I was able to move it a little front and back, and no side to side,
should there be absoulutly no movement?I still get a lound clunk, and it feels
like the engine is jumping up a few times whenever i let out the clutch too
quickly. Anything else i should check out?
