I believe that the output for VW's is 13v or so. I think 14.4v is another
standard.

I am fairly certain that the standard is the standard, regardless of vehicle.
It has more to do with being able to charge the battery at an acceptable rate
than anything else. I just measured my GTI with defogger, high beams, and
blower on high, and got the following results...
No load Under load
Battery + to chassis 13.78V 13.56V
Alternator + to chassis 13.76V 13.67V
I am surprised at the amount of drop that Mark R. is getting from the
alternator to the battery.
