So I was thrashing around my 91 GLi the other day, racing around all over
the place like I usually do (i drive like an asshole) only extrodinary hard
this time (rpm into gas gauge kinda stuff), anyway, the engine started
idling funny and blowing smoke afterwards. At first I though I skipped a
notch on my timing belt (just replaced it last week so it could still be
loose) one of the times I buried the tach, but I checked it and it lined up
correctly with TDC. Then I feared that it was a blown head gasket, so I did
a compression test. all 4 are 180, almost dead on (with plugs all out). Now
I'm a little frightened and stumped...please help.
Syptoms:
1. Idle is rough, takes a long time to start, very different from before
2. Blows blue smoke out the tailpipe, i think it's blue, but i hope i'm
color blind...grr
3. Has plenty of power still, almost exaclty the same after 2500rpm or so,
feel quirky below that, some misfiring if you listen closely
4. No new mechanical sounds in the head or block that I can hear
5 Timing moves around a little while idling, but I think this is normal
computer stuff when there is something wrong, timing is the same other than
that.
I have to admit that I'm a bit stumped by the compression test. I was all
set to replace a head gasket before that. Is it possible that a lifter was
damaged and a valve is stuck closed, thus keeping compression good? Has
anyone ever heard of this happening or have any other suggestions.
Thanks all.
