I think you could also use a hand pump to pull a vacuum on the system.
I got a "Mighty Vac" from Autozone for around $25-30.  I've only used
it for bleeding brakes, haven't had to evacuate an a/c system with it.
Not sure how effective it would be, or if it would get any of the oils
that are in the lines, but it will pull a pretty good vaccum.  Probably
better than just hoping the freon escapes.

Don't forget to replace the a/c drier whenever you expose the system to
air, otherwise, there'll be moisture trapped in there.
