Sounds like you're pretty much screwed.  You signed
away any rights with the purchase agreement. 
Particularly since this was a private party sale and
not a dealer.  A private individual doesn't have to
offer nor warranty any car, it's pretty much buyer
beware.

This is why it's SO important to get a used car
checked out by a mechanic before purchase!  If the
seller is unwilling to let you, then you know the car
isn't for you.  If you're not from the area, pick a
dealer and bring the car there...
