You should put the best speakers you can in the front,
concentrating on the mids and highs.  This is where
you'll get your sound stage from.In the rear you can
focus on bass; since bass is largely non directional. 
You don't really need super highs in the back.  If you
put 6x9's in the rear try to mount them towards the
front of the rear lid so they won't exert as much
weight on the hatch struts.  On the Jetta the factory
rears are 4" round.  Putting 6x9's back there is tough
and sloppy, I usually put a plate speaker like the ADS
or Boston Acoustics back there and then a Bazooka in
the trunk.
