[A2-16v] remove shocks

I've replaced the front struts and springs on my jetta.  It was getting 
late so I'll save the rear shocks for another day.  I thought I would be 
able to quickly remove them, but I was only able to remove one of the 2 
nuts that are at the top of each shock.  There isn't enough room to get a 
wrench down on the 2nd one.  Any tips?
