The engine should be the same robust 2.0l 16V motronic engine that is in the 90-92 Golf 16V.
What you may want to watch out for is 1. Automatic Seatbelts. these are the same problematic seatbelts which runs your battery dead if it does not move freely. 2. Check for high voltage consumers in the power locks and power windows. Also run your battery dry 3. High speed fan switch on the dashboard often shorts and melts dashboard-- It is a fire hazard. Other than that, it only has 10.1" brakes up front which were sufficient for the lightweight A2 but under braked for the heavier B3. Make sure those are in good condition.
