I bought one for parts... Before parting it, I was surprised of the power it
had (110 hp?). It was a pretty peppy car and I can see why it would be "highly
tunable". I could feel the difference between that car and a normal "8v" jetta.

Sadly, the ones remaining have corrosion issues (unless it was parked all its
life). Mine has big rust spots around the door handles, middle of door, around
the windshield, the gas door, and the floor... ugh. I wanted to restore it as
a winter beater, but got discouraged because of this rust problem.

I would highly encourage someone to buy one if one can be found in mint
condition.

Not another Wolfsburg debate. ugg. Trim package - who cares.

The 86 GLI has the same engine as a CIS-E 8V GTI. Therefore the bottom end
is the same as any 1.8L Jetta but the head is different (big valve). Should
have a 4 into 2 manifold to a dual downpipe, CIS-E injection. If I ever
found one, I would consider buying it as these are highly tunable (i.e. NOT
digifant) and straight specimens are becoming rather rare. At least in my
neck of the woods.

The Goodwill auction will be on the 9th and I'm only willing to spend $300.
The car is a red '86 GLI Wolfsburg 5 speed in great shape except it has a
cracked block.

Can any one tell me how much interest there is in '86 GLI's. I looked at an
identical one except it was an auto. It needed paint and the interior
wasn't
as good and he wanted $1800 for it. He seemed to think he had something
special. He said the factory alloys he had were rare. The one at Goodwill
has the same rims. I'd like to know how common '86 GLI's with Wolfsburg
trim
are and their value.

Is the engine any different from a regular Jetta of the same year? If not,
Is the bottom end the same?
