Changing the axles is not that big a job.  It may take 2 special tools, but
if you can turn a wrench you should have a easy time under the car.

Those 2 special tools you'll need aren't really that special.  You'll need a
Tripple-Squalre tool (which you could brobably borrow from someone) for
removing the drive lines from the tranny.
The second tool you'll need a 19mm socket (someone coffect me if I'm wrong)
to remove the nut holding the axle to the spindle.
Other than those tools you should have a can of penetrating oil (not WD-40)
and some anti-sieze.
I estimate that it should take an afternoon to actually complete the job.

Most mechanics won't even bother repairing CV joints, usually they'll just
order new ones and you won't have to pay for the labour for a mech to repair
the broken ones.
