New nuts are already oval but a used nut gets rounded when you put it on.
No, it's not a good idea. The threads themselves are not damaged because
you're not making the thing severely oval. The best option is to do it right
and use a new nut, but I have done this a couple of times with no problems,
unlike my attempt to reuse the inner CV joint bolts.
