My '90 GLI also seems to lose a 1/2 Gallon every 600 miles. It does it only when running, I had my entire waterpump/thermostat & heatercore replaced within the last 5000miles by New Dimensions here in Santa Clara, CA. I'm sure I have a hairline crack in something somewhere... It's probably that plastic flange from the head under the Dizzy. Until it gets worse I'm not too worried, I just won't take the car to go on any long trips.
