Yeah. I know the soured bit, sort of.
I had huge plans for my current GLI, but since this 93 Miata followed
me home a couple months ago, I'm not as hell bent on turning the GLI
into my performance sled.
Instead, it's going to serve as my daily driver and while I want it
to be nice I'm shifting to just a "maintain" attitude. That's a
little easier since I already have the suspension I like and the
brake upgrade. The only thing left is the engine :). But even a
getting my 2.0 ready is going to be less than buying a new car. And
I've gotten more comfortable in doing the work myself. My latest
example is when that oil cooler seal went. Instead of upgrading to a
full blown cooler set up, I just replaced the $3 seal. Much easier to
take than the $300 path I was heading toward.
So yeah, I wouldn't sweat a little oil here and there. Fix it when
you really WANT to get in to it. You're still probably better off
than you would be in a new car.

How many people out there have A2's that don't leak a drop of oil?
I've replaced my valve cover gasket twice in the past and currently
smell burning oil on trips longer than 10 minutes.
Wow! I had no idea that I'd get that many responses.
Forgot to mention, I've changed the valve cover gasket twice, also
changed the oil pan gasket once, and even the right hand flange seal on
the tranny.
Also, my car only has 103,000 miles.
Apparently, oil burning is a part of A2 life. The reason I asked was to
see if it was even worth doing anything about. I'm tired of throwing
money into my beloved GLI. Between this, the whole exhaust situation
(see other recent post), and a $1k repair bill to fix a broken tranny
support bracket and a laundry list of other things in December, I'm
really getting soured on the whole VW ownership experience. :/
Laters,
