The tranny is a biatch to get out.
It helps to have an extra set of hands around.

I just replaced the clutch and tranny on my cousin's 86 Golf and it was my
first time ever doing something like that.
To get the tranny out of position I had to completely remove the arm that
meets the transmission mount (I wasn't even sure that the arm would come off
because it looks like part of the tranny). Then the flanges kept getting
caught up in that shield. After that I was pretty much bench pressing the
tranny until it came free and lowered it onto my chest (just call me the
Incredible Hulk).

The pressure plate was hard to get out because the engine would turn every
time I would yank on my ratchet.
The hard part was getting the flywheel in the right place. The Flywheel has
little alignment pegs on the back side, in our case those pegs didn't want
to find a spot on the pressure plate, after a bit of coaxing it snapped into
place.
We had a 8V GTI (9A) tranny, but had to change the flanges to 90mm before
installing it.
To put the new tranny in was a bit easier than taking it out. Make sure
that the flanges are pointing at 12:00 and the tranny will go right in.
Then we mounted the mount back on the tranny, and attempted to put it in
place.

I think that was about it.

Mark Reda.
