Folks,

If I am not mistaken, taking out the dash is an "option" on doing the job. A friend of mine used to be the shop manager of York VW, York, PA and he told me that they discovered that they could remove it far easier. What it entailed (mind you I am 61 and am trying to remember a 15 year old conversation) is that once you cleared out the side of the console on the driver's side, the box containing the heater core was accessible. What they did was cut open the box with a "hot knife" or something that would take care of the plastic, remove and replace the heater core, and then "hot glue" the cut out piece of the box back in. Seems to me I remember the job taking about an hour and a half. Hadn't seen this guy for over 10 years but ran into him last night. Can call and reaffirm what I passed on if anyone is interested.

Larry,
Check with VW to see if the heater core was covered by the recall.
If its not, then get ready to take out the dash. It won't be a fun job.

Mark.
