I'm sure the shops do exist.  However, how many people
who own VW's, particularly of the A2, A3 vintage do
you know who have the funds available to give the car
to a shop for 7 months and a ground up restoration,
modfest and custom paint that will cost well over
$50,000?

The market drives the work done to the cars, if an
owner had that kind of money to invest in a car, they
wouldn't revamp an '88 GLI 16v for instance.

The old american iron, like the barracuda, are worth
significant money and doing a restoration of that sort
kinda makes sense...
