I see your point, but I have seen some sick VWs, mostly in picts from
car shows. Maybe all these being done by individuals..

I have also seen some intensive Bug restorations, and those cars are
not worth nearly what a cuda is after a restore. I guess the number of
Watercooled VW enthusiasts is relatively small.

I guess its just nice to dream that there is an ultimate shop somewhere
that would go ape on my 16V if I won the lottery or something. My
guess is that some of these Hot Rod shops would have no problem doing an
A2 VW, they might even find it a welcome change from their day to day.
But you might have a point, if you have $50K+ to burn, you might turn
to another car to burn it on.

I'm sure the shops do exist. However, how many people who own VW's,
particularly of the A2, A3 vintage do you know who have the funds
available to give the car to a shop for 7 months and a ground up
restoration, modfest and custom paint that will cost well over $50,000?

The market drives the work done to the cars, if an owner had that kind
of money to invest in a car, they wouldn't revamp an '88 GLI 16v for
instance.

The old american iron, like the barracuda, are worth significant money
and doing a restoration of that sort kinda makes sense...
