[a2-16v-list] Any heater core tips?

My heater core blew while on 95 north this morning. Coolant, fog was 
everywhere, it was pretty bad. I'm trying to decide if I want to replace it 
myself. Car is a 92 GLI, and VWoA says that according to the VIN, I'm not 
covered on the recall. A big part of me just wants to replace it myself on 
Saturday, I got some pretty good directions (found a nice PDF that VW 
dealers got, with step by step instructions, email me if you want it), but 
then I'm thinking that maybe I should just fight with VW to get it covered. 
What do folks think? Anyone replaced theirs and have some advice or warnings?
