Sounds like it could definitely be fuel related (as you
suspect)....I'd throw a new transfer pump in there just for kicks if
you've never replaced it --- at the very least, check out the strainer
on the transfer pump pickup.  A piece of debris blocking it (getting
stuck there, releasing itself) would cause the problems you've
experienced.
