I believe I have a 020 9A transmission in my 91 gli that the PO
installed when is killed the 020 2Y that came in it. The 9A has the
same gears 1-4 as the 16V trany 2Y and the 100mm flanges. It also has a
taller 5th. The only down side is that you have to use a 8v clutch with
the smaller splines as mentioned earlier. If you are putting in a bolt
kit you are fixing the biggest weakness of the 020. Check out this link
to compare all 020 transmissions.

Another consideration, the 16V trannies have a larger diameter splined
shaft, the thingy that goes into the clutch plate. Maybe it can handle more
torque? The PO of my A2 GTI had mated a 2.0 to an 8V tranny (I was told
off an 8v Jetta) it had the tall 5th but, it also had the 100mm flanges as
I've since swapped axles around. It's around 10 deg in my garage otherwise
I'd check the number.
Good luck-

Subject: [a2-16v-list] Need help with Transmission selection
I've revived the rebuilding/restoration of my A2 Golf and I just purchased a
Peloquin Torque Sensing Differential for the O2O transmission from WRD
Racing. They had a nice price on the diff and the bolt kit.
See http://www.wrdusa.com
WRD already had a good price listed for the LSD but there was an additional
discount because of an organized VORTEX group buy.
Now my dilema. My Golf was originally a 1.8l 8V with an ACN 5sp
transmission. This tranny has the gear ratios I prefer for freeway driving.
However, This trans isn't known for its strength and its equipped with the
smaller 90mm flanges. So I don't think this would be a good candidate for a
rebuild and LSD installation. I know I could change the flanges to 100mm but
I think I remember the trannies from the early MKIIs had several weaknesses.
The guys at WRD Racing suggested I look into MKIII 2.0l gearboxes because
they would have the 100mm flanges and the taller gearing.
Any input from your experiences would be appreciated? Any suggestions?
-Les
