I took the door panels off all four doors in the past week so I could
track down the leaks. While having someone spray water at the windows
I could quickly see how water collects between the inner door metal
and the plastic liner. So after using a latex adhesive to attach the
new liners which didn't hold well, I took off the two liners i had
done and cleaned the doors from the leftover adhesive. The next time
around I used the 3m heavy duty spray and replaced the two driver's
side liner with new ones I cut then cleaned and reglued the lower rear
section of both passenger doors. I'll let it dry for a couple days
then do the spray test with the hose again.
When the lower window seal shrinks and no longer fits tight against
the window a lot of water is able to run down the window and flow
directly against the lower part of the liners. I may even have to
drill the drain holes larger since my car sits on an incline and most
of the water has to exit through the hole at the back of the doors. I
don't want the water to back up and leak through the door clips. If
the window seal was new I bet there would hardly be enough water
coming into the door to worry about. Maybe I'll check out the cost of
the window seals. Last I remember it was going to cost me over $100
to replace them all.
I am almost motivated enough to install my megasquirt fuel injection
now that I've put an end to the major water leaks. That is much more
interesting than finding and fixing leaks.

Chad,
Odds are the plastic liners inside the doors are the problem.
Not a hard nor expensive repair. Pull the door hardware & cards and
then peel off what plastic is left. I've used one large "Contractor"
trash bag and was able to get a liner for each side out of it. Use
one of the old ones as a template (they are the same on both sides)
if you can get it off the door in one piece. While you have them
off, take a few minutes to tighten any bolts inside the door (window
channel, etc.) and get some lube on any moving parts.
Clean all the old residue off of the door and using a spray
adhesive like 3M heavy duty, attach the new liner to it. Once you
have it tacked in place, trim it as required and then go around the
edges with some good quality duct tape (3M or "Gorilla" type). Job
done, never to have to be fiddled with again......Jack

Maybe I'll start be replacing all the plastic in the doors and see if
the water leak stops? Anything else I should have a look at? I am no
good at troubleshooting water leaks on my vws. I should be because
they all have leaked - maybe its by design. How about I drill some
small holes in the floor where the water puddles up...
