I've heard of valves surviving, but only when the belt broke at idle speed, sitting at a stoplight. In gear and at any sort of rpm? Zero chance...
My '89 GTI still lives, though I've bought a second car (boring Toyota, ugh) just so I could have something to ferry GTI parts with. There's a full megasquirt setup sitting on my desk waiting for warmer weather...
