I could quite possibly be wrong here. I've learned from experience
not to trust VW to be "logical" about how
they spec out there electronic controllers. Like with CIS-E Motronic,
there could be three or four different ECU's
used within one model, engine code, and year, and if you have to
replace an ECU, or want to "chip" it, and don't properly identify
the part number AND "code" of the original ECU, you run the risk of
the car not even running when you're done.
At least with Motronic, the fuel, ignition, and knock controllers are
integrated into the same package. That is why I proposed
the possibility of a compatibility issue between the CIS-E ECU and
knock sensor controller.
The best way of determining if that may be the case is to go into
ETKA, and see what P/N's and/or codes it calls out for
your specific vehicle. Or you could shoot an email to Mike Potter at
Virtual World, and see what he has to say on the
subject (Mike was a Master VW Technician back in the day).

Interesting - I always match the part number for the computer but
didn't realise that the Knock Sensor Control Unit had to match as
well. It makes sense that the A/T units would be different from the
M/T units but didn't realize there was such a difference between
model years. Time to go back and "catalog" my collection...
Then again, I've been on VW Vortex as of late where the proper
response to your post would have been:
"NFW - you don't know s**t about VWs, yo. My friend, who works on
cars, says that you're full of s**t because he's swapped all kinds
of boxes around before without any change. The best fix that me and
my buds found is to ditch that CIS-E crap and go Megasquirt b/c CIS-
E is just plain junk. When I get my Megasquirt system running on my
2.0, I'll smoke your car on the street"
Sorry - I digress <G>

Either that or possibly mismatched ECU and knock sensor control
unit. You need
to make sure
that the ECU part number/code and the K/S/C/U part number are from
the exact
same year/engine code
and not one or the other from an A/T car, or different year/engine
code (PF/9A
etc.).
Just a thought...

CIS-E, right? My experiences have been that if the DPR voltage
doesn't
change, it's usually a bad O2 sensor. When it fails, the DPR goes

great, it's too
rich and performance suffers.

At one point I had 2 '88 GTi's, before getting rid of the 2nd
one, I
stripped it. Now I have 2 of pretty much everything. 2 airboxes/
fuel
distributors, 2 ecu's, 2 knock sensor cu's. Except only 1 knock
sensor
and only 1 coolant temp sensor. I tried every combination of what I
have and never could get the DPR voltage to move from 10mA. It
idled
and ran just fine but I don't think it pulled like the original
2.0 It
always ran hot even after a new thermostat, radiator and water
pump. I
ran it as rich as I could (too rich according to my buddy at the
inspection/smog check. CO was high)Any suggestions?
Steve
PS ran every test in the Bentley all OK
