That was going to be my method.  I really wanted to get the oil
flowing prior to the cranking (even with the plugs out), but I would
have had to take off a bunch of stuff to free up the intermediate
sprocket first... and that is before even putting the engine in the
car.  I used assembly lube on all bearings so I am not too concerned
about cranking with the plug removed.  Do I need to fill anywhere with
oil prior to cranking?  I didn't fill the pump from the top but I did
dump some assembly lube in the gears.  Also I didn't fill up the oil
filter because I felt I may need to remove it at some point... and I
have had to remove it a couple times already :)   I usually don't
prefill the oil filter anymore but I used to do this all the time.
