Actually, I have a "box" (8.5x20') as well. Not quite a long as your but a
box nonetheless.
I am betting we could swap some pretty nasty "Towing Tales" of encounters we
had had with the various pinheads and morons we have run into (well almost).
My favorite are people who come down an on-ramp that has a yield sign and
think a tow vehicle & trailer can magically make a new, unoccupied lane to
move into to let their royal azz merge into the lane I'm in.
Also like people who pass a tow vehicle and pull back so soon that they
literally almost rip off your front bumper.
Larry, so glad to see you made it okay. Sorry to see your bumper did not
fair so well.

Try towing a 27' enclosed trailer - you'd be amazed what other drivers will
do so they can pass the "box".
Several years ago, I was towing a friend's "new" RX-7 around the Washington
DC area. I was in the centre lane (of 3) and watched a pinhead in a Phaeton
trying to pass on the right. Since this is perhaps the MOST stupid passing
manouever possible, especially when dealing with a trailer, I made a point
to turn up my chip, downshift and "crop dust" accordingly. I didn't realize
that Phaeton's had such good brakes...
Yes, be very aware and alert when towing - the other drivers will do
everything you've read about in the "Don't do this or you will die"
handbook. In fact, they'll even write new entries about stupidity - things
like merging in front of you at 80 mph and immediately braking to 65 mph
because YOU should be travelling at the same speed because you're towing and
towing is dangerous.

I recently did a LONG Tow (1700 miles) with one of my VWs as well.
Expect the unexpected and never, ever, underestimate what DUMB things other
drivers on the road will do when you are towing.
I have found over the years that it seems that a trailer being towed
attracts IDIOT drivers like you would not believe.
Have a safe trip!

Hi 16Vers,
First of all, apologies for the empty messages. As you can tell my cell
phone is not working as it should as I head down I95 South.
I meant to tell you all that at midnight Saturday night I was passing the
George Washington Bridge in NYC on my way to Tampa.
We are moving to Tampa today and my buddy and I have the Red 91 GTI 16V on
a car carrier. So if you see a red 16V being towed by a Penske down I95
South - that's us. My wife and my buddy's wife drove to the DC area with
my Audi and my wife's Sonata to board the Auto Train.
I am looking forward to having a garage finally where I can work on the
cars. I will definitely need the help of this list as I try to tackle
getting the 16V in as good of shape as I can.
Anyone in Tampa, let me know.
Eight hours until we arrive in Tampa...
Larry
