Ok, here's what's SUPPOSED to happen: When you turn the key on, the bulb in the dash should light. When you turn the key to start, everything goes dark. Once you release the key and the engine is running, the alternator bulb should remain out if it is charging normally. If the bulb illuminates, then the alternator isn't charging, at least at idle. Then, if you rev the engine and the bulb goes out, the alternator isn't providing enough voltage at low RPM's. If the alternator light never illuminates, then more than likely, the bulb is bad. A bad indicator bulb shouldn't affect whether or not the alternator is charging properly.
