I just went through this about a month ago with the purchase of tires. After crunching the numbers I found that buying the tires from a local tire shop saved me a few dollars over Tirerack + shipping + local mounting, balancing and tire disposal. It was not that much money but it also supported a local business. I go through the same ritual each time I buy tires just out of curiosity and for piece of mind.
