Seems like things might have changed these days with the man-made coatings being used now. Just looked up how a pro detailer would do windows and it seems they now use polymer coatings on the glass (sort of like super-Rain-X). They also seem to use Alcohol on the rubber – this might not be safe for our old rubber. Personally when I try to clean the rubber trim on my Mk2, it turns all the rags black and the black never seems to stop coming off. Never tried to keep going for an hour and never tried alcohol to see if it would eventually stop giving off black. Might just be 20 years of dirt on my rubber trim. Ha.
This is a summary of one of the high end techniques I found: 1) Wash the car and windows with a proper wash method 2) Clean Trim with All Purpose Cleaner or Rubber Cleaner 3) ClayBar or AutoScrub the Windows 4) Clean the Trim with 90%+ Isopropyl Alcohol 5) Two coats of Gyeon Q2 Trim on trim 6) Clean Windows & Wiper Blades with Glass Cleaner 7) Wipe glass with Isopropyl Alcohol 8) Use Gyeon Q2 Prep 9) Wipe with damp towel 10) Wipe with a dry towel 11) Two coats of Gyeon Q2 View/Repel (This is the polymer coating stuff) Products Used: http://www.esotericcarcare.com/gyeon-q2-trim/ http://www.esotericcarcare.com/gyeon-q2m-prep/ http://www.esotericcarcare.com/gyeon-q2-view/ http://www.esotericcarcare.com/gyeon-q2m-clay/ http://www.esotericcarcare.com/gyeon-q2m-claylube/ -Larry From: [email protected] [mailto:[email protected]] Sent: Monday, November 30, 2015 10:36 AM To: [email protected] Subject: Re: [mk2-16v] Gases from Old Plastic Glass Wax!! My folks had a can of that pink stuff (yes, a metal can - LONG before plastic bottles were invented). I wonder if Glass Wax or Vinegar affects window tint. My buddy who tints windows uses Invisible Glass so I'd imagine that's a good formula for those of us with tinted windows. Once cleaned, a coating of Rain-X anti-fog (in a black bottle) would probably help as well. I used to use it on a large mirror in the bathroom/shower room and didn't have a problem with fogging. Oddly enough, I never used it on the inside of my windshields!! On 30 Nov 2015, at 10:17, Holland Phillips wrote: Oops, forgot the technique. Put the vinegar in a spray bottle, mist the glass. Wad a full sheet of newspaper into a loose ball and wipe the glass. Repeat as needed. Should leave the glass clear and free of any deposits. Another option is a product called "Invisible Glass" available at any auto parts store, and possibly Walmart. -- You received this message because you are subscribed to the Google Groups "MK2-16v" group.
