To chime in my $0.02 -
My preferance would be toward realism, as shown by most of the images I have
comissioned of Murikeer and Kozaithy.
As for a group image - If the individual creators would be willing to pony in
for such shots they would be workable. Generally that's in the area of $40-60
per character in an illustration, I am unsure about additional background, for
a decent artist. And that's pretty darn cheap!
As well, the groups should be relatively small - no more than six to eight
characters. Otherwise they get so crowded or (as Matt linked) so small that
the individuals can barely be identified in the mob.
Matt's idea of themes is also a very good one; Mages, Clergy, Nobles,
Crafters, ect.
I'd be willing to add to the pot for such works if we can agree on a worthy
artist (and that, my friends, will be the absolute MOST difficult part of the
whole thing!).
