in my oppinion, Slack 8.0/8.1 are a bit too big for 16 megs. Yes, it is true that it can work, but... I was working on this type of computers with smaller versions (6.x) and it never happened. Anyway, at the install time, did you select to check for bad sectors? If you did that and it gave you no err, it seems to me that there is a bit too big S.8.x.
