as a tip:

you might consider configuring SAMBA through SWAT, it's web based
configurator, It might be a hassle installing an
extra bit of cruft on your pc but it's worth it,
cause of the online help.

as to permission masks its a bit beyond me, but the main point
is that SAMBA aplies a mask that 'changes' the perrmisions of
directories (and files)
