Group...

I suggest that the MLUG sets up a sub-committee to investigate running
real-world MS applications under wine or dosemu.

Some applications are already covered under www.winehq.com I believe. Other
stuff we should test in real-world scenario.

I have actually managed to run the DOS-based version of Sage (Line 50 or
Version 9) successfully under dosemu/freedos. I only had printing issues
really, but I didn't have the incentive / time to investigate further.

This way, we can really look at applications for the real world.

We should go further and request the local companies to provide us with a
test version of their software where applicable (Shireburn is the first that
comes to mind) to get it to run under wine or dosemu, because if we can get
commercial accounting applications running under Linux, a LOT of inroads can
be made!

X'tahsbu?

Subject: Re: [LINUX.ORG.MT] Distros, Distros!!

Hello everybody,

Philip,
Save your /etc and do not format your /home partition.

I have followed-up your posts yday & 2day; it look like you are ready to
start the Linux revolution. Good for you, and good luck, but if you really
want some success, try INFILTRATE corporations/companies. Look for standard
(I mean standard office duties) and server needs. Because I don't think you
will succeed to use whatever payroll/accounting software which was developed
having Windows environment in mind. Try instead to make all communication
through Linux, followed by administration tasks, backup procedures,
available spare space, in one word, things you are SURE 100% they will work
without ONE problem. Otherwise, people will start saying that is not a good
software, that is difficult to use. How many of you do remember about
Windows 3.x and DOS environments? Those long past days were not at all
easier than Linux today and still, people were not grumbling about it's
difficulies. But today, they do have an option as long as they don't have to
pay. Because they don't realize that there is nothing really FREE on this
world; ok, you do not pay money for it, but do use time! And, if you use
Windows without having a valid license (I mean, how many did they pay for
it????) why to bother ?

This is not flame, but from my experience with Linux.

In respect of new home users, you should try to give them bootable distros
(Knoppix or Mepis) to try to use them. They have everything ready: mp3
players, movie players, lots of e-mails clients and browsers, interfaces and
so on. They do not need to install nothing; digital cameras, usb printers
and flash sticks are supported out-of-the box. Even TV tunners are ready to
be used.

Hat off Keith, you are gathering people around and keep the movement; have
you checked on www.linuxdocs.org? Have you consider going first in
education? I mean schools, coleege and University. Go and setup there some
networks, build for them some webservers and forums using Apache, PHP and
whatever you will need on Linux to keep them moving. Do not expect computer
companies to install Linux, as long there is no law to force them to give
the computer functional (with a valid, LEGAL, OS installed). And you know
what I mean.

Friends, keep the good work going, keep your spirit up and try O'Connor!
