Hello Keith, Check if there are no conflicts with some other sound drivers caused by hotplug during boot. put into blacklist corresponding OSS driver. What alsa version do you run?
I have alsa sound with packages alsa-base and alsa-utils installed, plus 2.6.8 kernel. Probably you can try rebuilding alsa modules (alsa-source) for your kernel.
