Actually, I ditched Debian and installed Gentoo on my home system too.

First I installed everything (without the USE="+alsa" flag). Then I
added this flag and installed ALSA. I then ran alsaconf, rebooted, and
low and behold, sound is working.

Thanks to Kevin for the help, these instructions worked on two
computers already.
