If you are using a 2.6 kernel you should have ALSA by default unless you speficically specified to install OSS.
When building your kde or gnome you should have the ALSA flag before. Should you want to add ALSA support later on in the day you have to recompile arts and kdelibs. Can somebody fill me in what is needed to be recompiled with the ALSA use flag for GNOME ? If you don't feel like recompiling your software for ALSA support you can always fire up the ALSA OSS compatibility layer from the kernel (I have mine built as a kernel module). Thats how I currently have it setup at work coz I forgot to put in the ALSA use flag while installing. I put it in later but will only get support once 3.3.1 gets into stable - don't feel like recompiling everything since I am working right now.
