Hi Graham,
what may be happening is that your Hostname is being
determined via DHCP at the very early stages of booting.
Probably through /etc/rc.sysinit. One way to get around this on
Fedora is to put the hostname in /etc/sysconfig/networking/devices/<interface>
file.
The entry should be:
HOSTNAME=myhostname.whatever.etc.etc.
If this fails. You can set up an init script in rc5.d (which I assume is your
normal run level) which changes the hostname to whatever you want and runs at
a point before apache, sendmail or X kick in.I assume that it works after
logging out and logging back in AFTER you would have changed the hostname
manually.
It's not the remote system that is corrupting your hostname.
It's your machine asking the remote system to give it a hostname
which, although undesirable in your circumstances (as they are in mine in
fact), is quite different. If you had an other DHCP server sitting between
you and ONVOL, you would get the same result.
Cheers
