Hallo, The reply by Andrew is correct. For a Suse system, you have to edit file
/etc/sysconfig/network/dhcp which contains comments which advise you about the choices to make. The strange thing is that the default is to allow the DHCP server to change the hostname. At that point, even trying to get another terminal window gave the popup KDEInit could not launch 'Konsole' so the system was basically dead! Thanks for the help, Graham Petley
